David Arneson, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons game, dies at 61

I cannot believe another D&D creator has failed his savings throw. Having just started Dungeon Mastering for my sons and his friends – I cannot help but think that the time may have finally ended for pencil and paper games for me. Just 3 hours of play with them leaves me exhausted. I am guessing that perhaps there time has come and our time is gone. I am so tired I can only muster strength for WoW.

Ling Stated it properly: D&D – Gateway Drug?

Ling just sent me an email and since he did not blog it (shame on him) I will… Adam Rogers (from wired) has an article on the New York Times website that sadly/gladly reflects the life path of many of my friends and I… We started with Dungeon & Dragons almost 30 years ago and today I get my RP fill by playing World of Warcraft and of course I own an iPhone. It is fun to look back in retrospective at something like the impact of Dungeons and Dragons but at the same time it is hard to say that was the beginning of the path that I call my life… Perhaps just a very important tool along the way..

Gary Gygax fails his saving throw…

Truly a sad day for me and my high school friends as the great Gary Gygax (the Stan Lee of Roleplaying games) enters into the gates of Valhalla… Gary was one of the founders of the game Dungeon’s and Dragons which I spent so much time playing on the weekends as a youth… Wired reported it first…

Reality Gaming

Ah, another reality gaming endeavor! I keep hearing about these over the last five-ten years it seems, but not much after they actually take place. Text messages to your phone for a treasure hunt. I saw an interesting “choose your own adventure” recently (prolly Boing Boing or Gizmodo) that involved small text snippets painted on sidewalks with a male and female storyline that basically winds you both up in a coffee shop to meet. Hmmm, must find that link, that was kinda intersting. Viola!
And then of course there’s the Micheal Douglas movie, The Game. Or sure, The Running Man, The Condemned, or The Truman Show. What fun! These reality games are intriguing in their modern flashmob approach to gaming with some “choose your own adventure” script writing. Wiki of course has a decent entry on the genre.

World of Warcraft

Ok so this is not so cyberpunk but I love this game! It looks like a new expansion pack is coming out at some point in the future (no release date). Good news – level cap moved to 80, new quests, hero class, new instances, siege weapons, destructible buildings – good fun!
